Lone Star College-CyFair students visit Austin for Community College Day.
LSC-CyFair Meets Gov. Perry in Austin at Community College Day - Lone Star College-CyFair students Angelee Brown and Jonathan Flores described Community College Day in Austin as “amazing” and “a creative and highly interactive learning experience.”
In addition to tours of the capitol and the Bob Bullock Texas State History
Museum, LSC-CyFair students visited with the staff of
Sen. Dan Patrick and Rep. Bill Callegari and also had the opportunity to meet Gov. Rick Perry.
The Austin trip is an annual visit for LSC-CyFair student ambassadors, those in
the Student Government Association and students in political science,
government and history classes.
“I think it was a valuable learning experience not only for our students to see
how our state government functions on a daily basis, but just to be in a
political atmosphere and see where representatives work each day on our behalf,
” said Heidi Jo Green, associate professor of political science .
Chaperoning the LSC-CyFair students were Holly Williams, student activities director; Paul Donaldson, student services manager; Dr. Jim Brown, political science department chair; and Michael Fey, English professor.

Cy Falls Debaters Successful at Forensic Competition - The Cypress Falls High School speech and debate team competed in the East
Texas National Forensic League competition, with three students qualifying for
the 2009 The Stars Fell on Alabama Nationals in June.
Saif Kazim and Sara Meghji qualified for nationals in Lincoln Douglas Debate, while Meghji also qualified
for nationals in Extemporaneous Speaking.
Ali Khan earned an alternate position in Lincoln Douglas Debate.

Jersey Village Student Attends National Youth Leadership Forum - Jersey Village High School sophomore Michael McIlhenny attended the National Youth Leadership Forum on National Security in Washington,
D.C.
Outstanding students from across the country came together to participate in the
career development program where they gained insight into the inner workings of
U.S. diplomacy, intelligence and national security.
Michael is a cadet 1st Lieutenant in the Air Force Junior ROTC at Jersey
Village, has also been selected to attend the prestigious Air Force Aerospace
and Technology Honor Camp at Kirtland Air Force Base in New Mexico this summer.
The purpose of the Aerospace and Technology Honors Camp is to introduce
high-achieving high school cadets to scientific, technical and flight
opportunities in the Air Force.
In addition to attending the AFJROTC Honors Camp this summer, McIlhenny is
completing his training to become a licensed private pilot. After graduating,
he plans to attend the United States Air Force Academy.

Student Wins Dear Mr. President Contest - Black Elementary School fifth-grade student Jessica Ullrich was selected as one of 200 winners nationwide for Scholastic Book Clubs’ “Dear Mister President” contest.
Ullrich’s one-page letter to President Barack Obama was chosen from among 15,000 entries
from all over the country and spoke to a broad range of questions and concerns
on the minds of America
’s students. The winners, ranging from grades 2-6, were chosen based on clarity
and originality of thought.
Ullrich received a 10-book presidential library from Scholastic Book Clubs.
Student Journalists Win Gold Circle Awards From Columbia - Three Cypress Falls High School students garnered eight Scholastic Gold Circle
Awards from the Columbia Scholastic Press Association. The Gold Circle Awards
recognize superior work by student journalists, both individually and as an
entire staff in print and online media. The students
’ work was judged by experienced journalists and educators
familiar with the context surrounding student journalism. More

than 13,000 entries were submitted for this annual competition and
approximately1,000 awards were given in the 241 different categories.
Andy Tittle, Golden Eagle yearbook senior staff member, won three awards: first place for A Little Help, second place for Yal Not Yak and honorable mention for Never Stop in the Yearbook division, Sports action photo: Sports action black and white
photo category.
April Cunningham, former Golden Eagle yearbook staff member, also won three awards including first place for Football and second place for Volleyball in the Yearbook division, Sports multi-page presentation: Black and white
category; and honorable mention for
Fighting Chance in the Yearbook division, Sports page one spread: Black and white category.
Chelsea Ruffino, Wingspan senior staff member, won a pair of first-place awards: for Unnecessary Art in the Newspaper division, Page one design: Tabloid format black and white
category; and for
Through the Net in the Newspaper division, Photo layout: Full page black and white category.

Golf Teams and Individuals Qualify for Regionals - The Cypress Falls High School boys and Cypress Woods High School girls golf
teams each placed first at the District 15-5A golf tournament.
Cypress Falls won the boys’ tournament with a two-day score of 819 at Cypress Lakes Golf Course. Golfers Jack Swanson (79-82–161), Matt McGlothlin (77-80–157), Jacob Pope (84-79–163), Brandon Fick (77-82–159) and Austin Dvorachek (87-92–179) represented the Eagles at the Region II meet in Waco.
The Cy-Fair High School boys were runners-up and also qualified for regionals.
Team members are
Jordan Rumora, Garrett Cook, Johnathan Singleton, Bryson Powers and Keith Rodriguez.
Individual boys’ medalists were Hunter Palmer (75-80–155) and Luke Sheehan (76-80–156) of Cypress Woods High School.
The Cypress Woods girls won with a two-day score of 893 at Jersey Meadows Golf
Course to qualify for regionals. Team members are
Kayli Quinton (79-75–154), Emily Franco (85-82–167), Courtney Zietsman (95-94–189), Casey Gilbert (93-86–179) and Grace Duncan (101-103–204).
The Cy-Fair girls placed second, also qualifying for regionals. Team members are
Jordan Sloan, Taylor Sloan, Kasey Pasquale, Lindsey Hardin and Teryn Smith.
Individual girls’ medalists were Audrey Koncaba (82-80–162) of Jersey Village High School and Kirby Kramer (82-85–167) of Langham Creek High School.
