area resident to be featured
at bayou city art festival
Kathy Womack, a graduate of Klein Oaks High School, will be among the 300
artists participating in the Bayou City Art Festival Memorial Park March 27-29.
The fine juried art festival, ranked the No. 3 festival in the U.S. by the
readers of
AmericanStyle magazine in the February 2009 issue, received 1,100 artists’ applications from all over the U.S. and Canada—the most in festival history.
A past Bayou City Art Festival featured artist, Womack is best known for her Women and Wine paintings. She will also exhibit her new Burlesque series this spring.
“I live vicariously through my paintings. As a mother of three my life is hardly
glamorous. It
’s very full, just not glamorous. So there’s this little piece of me that screams to put on some strappy sandals and an
evening frock and hit the town, see the girls, have a glass of wine
—or two,” said Womack. “Call the baby sitter and say you might be a little late. That’s the inspiration for Women and Wine. The success of the series lies in the fact that I share this view with many
women today who might feel the weight of our commitments and just need to get
out and mingle,
” she added.
Womack, whose art career began as a fashion illustrator/graphic designer for the
Austin American Statesman in retail advertising, notes that much of the creativity in her work focuses on
the women
’s fashion design. With the move to computer-generated images in the late ’80s, she switched from graphic design to fine art. Having always painted
throughout her life, she picked up her brushes again, with more purpose. In
addition to her canvases, she is painting her figures on wine barrels that can
be topped with glass to create custom tables.
Starting with First Look Friday on March 27, the award-winning Bayou City Art Festival Memorial Park welcomes more
than 300 visual and performing artists 10 a.m.-6 p.m. through Sunday, March 29.
The juried fine art event, the only festival to take place in Memorial Park,
showcases 19 media formats, transforming the park
’s tree-lined, 1.1-mile loop into a canopied outdoor art gallery, bursting with
fine art and multi-cultural music and dance. The colorful offerings include
clay, drawing/pastel, fiber/textiles, furniture, glass, jewelry, leather,
metal, mixed media, painting, photography, printmaking, sculpture, watercolor
and wood creations.
Admission is $10 for adults and free for children 12 and under.
The festival’s Emerging Artists program invites area high school students to create and
exhibit their 3-D installation and 2-D art in the park. Younger children will
enjoy the Capital One Bank Creative Zone, an interactive area designed for
children and families to explore the fun of art. All proceeds from donations
made in the Capital One Bank Creative Zone are divided equally among the
festival
’s participating nonprofit partners.
There is no public parking in Memorial Park. The festival provides free shuttle
service from 9 a.m.-7 p.m. to and from Memorial Park on Friday from Northwest
Mall on Hwy. 290; and Saturday and Sunday from Northwest Mall and downtown:
Memorial Drive at Rusk, Rusk at Smith and Smith at Capitol.
