Katy Naval Sea Cadet Receives Awards - Katy Naval Sea Cadet Tyler Meyer received a good citizenship award medal from the Sons of the American
Revolution. He is also the recipient of the Bill Archer Congressional
Scholarship, which includes a trip to Washington, D.C., where he will serve as
an intern for Congressman John Culberson. Meyer will meet with cabinet and
executive branch officials, members of the house and senate, and other
dignitaries and key players in Washington. Meyer attends Cy Creek High School.

Cy Woods Students Qualify for Thespian Convention - Three Cypress Woods High School theater students qualified for the
International Thespian Convention
—scheduled for June in Lincoln, Neb.,—for their performances at the Texas State Thespian Convention in Corpus Christi.
Seniors Katie Bennett and Allison Houser received second-place ratings on their Duet performance of August Osage County by Tracy Letts. Similarly, senior Austin Crow qualified for the International Thespian Convention with his solo pantomime,
which also placed second.
Katie and Allison were also recognized by the society for their outstanding
work, and each has been awarded a scholarship to pursue a theater arts degree.
Overall, Cypress Woods garnered two of the 10 acting scholarships awarded to
Texas high school students at the competition.
Langham Creek Boys, Cy Ridge Girls Win District Wrestling Meets - The Langham Creek High School boys and Cypress Ridge High School girls
wrestling teams won their respective District 21 meets.
Langham Creek won the boys meet with 256.5 points, followed by Cy-Fair (223.0),
Cypress Woods (222.0), Cypress Creek (181.5), Cypress Ridge (159.5), Cypress
Ranch (95.5), Jersey Village (92.5), Cypress Lakes (82.0), Cypress Springs
(63.0) and Cypress Falls (43.0).
Cypress Ridge won the girls meet with 104.0 points, followed by Langham Creek
(101.0), Cypress Creek (98.0), Cypress Falls (59.0), Cypress Springs (58.0),
Jersey Village (43.0), Cypress Lakes (40.0), Cy-Fair (36.0), Cypress Woods
(21.0) and Cypress Ranch.
NCTE Honors Cy Creek Literary Magazine - The Cypress Creek High School literary magazine, Graffiti, received a Superior rating in the 2009 National Council of Teachers of English
Program to Recognize Excellence in Student Literary Magazines.
PRESLM recognizes students, teachers and schools for producing excellent
literary magazines. The program
’s mission is to encourage all schools to develop literary magazines, seeking
excellence in writing and school-wide participation in production.
Graffiti includes art, photography, poetry and prose from freshmen, sophomores, juniors,
seniors and interested teachers. It was compiled by the Creative Writing class
led by student editor
Michael Drab (class of 2009) and faculty adviser Leslie Laird.
Students Place in Photography Contest - Twenty-one Cy-Fair ISD high school students received awards at the 2009
Association of Texas Photography Instructors Fall Contest. The print and
digital competition, which included a variety of categories including video and
computer imaging, received 7,715 entries from 80 schools and presented 409
winners with awards.

TORO Visits Jowell Elementary School - TORO was at the school to promote his nutrition and fitness program, TORO’s Training Table—presented by the Houston Texans and BP America.
The program features TORO interacting via video with players, cheerleaders and
the team dietitian, while explaining the value of good fitness and nutrition
habits and medical issues related to them.
The Jowell PTO sponsored TORO’s two performances as a gift to the students for their hard work throughout the
year.
Jersey Village Students Win TV Honors at Fall Nationals - Three Jersey Village High School students received honors at the Student
Television Network Fall Nationals.
Nick Garza and Chris Baker placed second for their public service announcement, Actions, while Adam Mendry received an honorable mention award for his public service announcement, Don’t Gamble.
Cy Falls Publications Win ILPC Lone Star Award - The UIL announced that the Cypress Falls High School newspaper, the Wingspan, and yearbook, the Golden Eagle, will both receive the Lone Star Award at the 2010 Interscholastic League Press
Conference Spring Convention.
The Lone Star Award was created to honor staffs that have proven themselves as
leaders of scholastic journalism in Texas. To earn the honor, Cypress Falls
earned the
“Award of Distinguished Merit” for each of the past 10 years. In addition, the journalism staffs earned a “Star” award in at least six of those years.
In the last 10 years, the Golden Eagle yearbook earned 11 Awards of Distinguished Merit, was nominated 11 times for a “Star” award—including 2010—and won nine “Star” awards.
Meanwhile, the Wingspan newspaper earned nine Awards of Distinguished Merit, was nominated eight times
for a
“Star” award and won seven “Star” awards.
High School Students Receive Yearbook Awards - Students from Jersey Village and Cypress Falls high schools were honored with
yearbook awards from Quill and Scroll and the National Scholastic Press
Association.
Three Jersey Village students were among the 193 national winners selected from
among 1,068 applicants in the 2009 Jostens and Quill and Scroll Yearbook
Excellence Contest. The following students won Gold Key awards:
Jillian Hernandez, senior, Feature Photo; Emily Johnson, 2009 graduate, Academic Photo; and Skye Comstock, 2009 graduate, Advertising and Graphics.
This marked the first time that the Jersey Village yearbook, the Falcon, has received four Gold Key awards for one year from this organization.
Additionally, the NSPA honored the 2009 Falcon yearbook with a first-class
rating and one mark of distinction in Coverage, while the Cypress Falls
Golden Eagle yearbook received a first-class rating and marks of distinction in
Concept/Ensemble, Coverage and Writing/Editing.
Cy-Fair ISD Welcomes Beijing Visitors - Cypress-Fairbanks ISD welcomed 26 secondary principals and administrators from
Beijing, China, who visited the district to glean best practices from Cy-Fair
ISD focusing on relationships with schools and the community.
The city of Houston Mayor’s Office of International Affairs recommended Cy-Fair ISD to the visitors as a
district from which to draw best practices. The Beijing delegation visited
Cy-Fair High School, Arnold Middle School and the Instructional Support Center.
They met a variety of administrators and heard a presentation from
Dr. David Anthony, superintendent of schools, who provided information about population and
enrollment growth, demographics, campus ratings, TAKS performance, New Arrival
Centers, community partnerships and involvement and the portrait of a Cy-Fair
ISD teacher. The delegation also stopped by the Cy-Fair ISD Exhibit Center
during the Livestock Show and Sale.

Cy-Fair ISD Schools Honored for Yearbook Excellence - Several Cy-Fair ISD middle school and high school yearbook staffs have been
recognized by Taylor Publishing with Awards of Excellence, honoring their
accomplishments in yearbook design and coverage.
Judges selected the following schools’ 2008-09 yearbooks among the best, and they will be featured in Taylor’s 2010 Yearbook Yearbook: Jersey Village, Cy-Fair and Cypress Falls high schools; and Aragon, Bleyl,
Goodson and Spillane middle schools.
Taylor awarded 15 other Cy-Fair ISD schools’ yearbooks with honorable mention recognition: Cypress Lakes, Cypress Ranch,
Cypress Ridge, Cypress Springs and Cypress Woods high schools; and Arnold,
Campbell, Cook, Dean, Hamilton, Hopper, Kahla, Labay, Truitt and Watkins middle
schools.
Yearbooks published by Taylor were evaluated in one or more of the following
areas: cover design, theme development, layout design, photo content and
secondary packages.
