Cy Creek Boys, Jersey Village Girls Win District Swim Meet - The Cypress Creek High School boys and Jersey Village High School girls won
their respective team championships in the District 15-5A Swim Championships.
Cypress Creek led the boys with 137 points, followed by Cy-Fair with 128.5 and
Cypress Ranch with 58.5. Rounding out the boys scoring were Cypress Woods (47),
Cypress Falls (41), Cypress Ridge (37), Langham Creek (36), Cypress Lakes (25),
Cypress Springs (22) and Jersey Village (13).
The Jersey Village girls tallied the most points with 122, followed by Cypress
Woods with 112 and Cypress Creek with 81. The remaining girls scores were
Cy-Fair (76), Langham Creek (61), Cypress Ranch (35), Cypress Ridge (27),
Cypress Springs (18), Cypress Lakes (12) and Cypress Falls (5).
Cypress Creek junior Jonathan Edwards was named the Boys Swimmer of the Meet, while Cypress Woods senior Cammile Adams was named the Girls Swimmer of the Meet. Cy-Fair sophomore Sommer Meyers was named the Girls Diver of the Meet, while Cypress Ridge junior Ryan Underwood was named the Boys Diver of the Meet. Cypress Creek coach Jeff Chandler was named the Boys Coach of the Year and Jersey Village coach Stuart Webb was named the Girls Coach of the Year.
The top six swimmers or relay teams in each event advanced to the Region 4 meet.
Cy Falls, Spillane Win District Science Olympiad - Cypress Falls High School
won the high school competition of the 2010 District Science Olympiad
tournament, while Spillane Middle School won the middle school competition.
Cypress Falls placed first in nine events, second in four events and third in
three events, finishing with a score of 72 to edge out second-place Cypress
Woods High School
’s 74. Jersey Village High School placed third with a 122. Jennifer Wuellner is a Cypress Falls teacher and Science Olympiad coach. Cypress Falls traveled to
the regional competition at the University of Texas.
In the middle school competition, Spillane placed first in eight events, second
in seven events and third in two events to place first with an overall score of
69. Hopper Middle School was second with an 84 and Goodson Middle School was
third with a 109.
“I am very proud of all the hard work, time and preparation the students put in
for getting ready for the district competition. So much independence and
motivation is required in Science Olympiad and the Spillane team rose to the
challenge to be successful in their events,
” said teacher and coach James Horner.
Houston Stars Theatre on Ice Team to Compete in Inaugural Nation’s Cup Championship in France - The 2009-10 Houston Starz Theatre on Ice team consists of 29 skaters from the
Starz of Houston Figure Skating Club who have been training at the Aerodrome
Ice Skating Rink in preparation for the Inaugural Nation
’s Cup World Championships in Toulouse, France.
Theatre on Ice combines the grace of figure skating with the excitement of
theater and dance. The skaters will be competing this April against teams from
Australia, Belgium, France, Spain, Russia, Sweden and the United States.
Contributions will help these skaters go to France for an once-in-a-lifetime
experience.
These skaters will represent Team USA in the Junior division, and hope to bring
home the gold.

The cast and crew of Cypress Woods High School’s theatrical performance of Lilly’s Purple Plastic Purse present a representative from the Snowdrop Organization with a $1,000 donation
to benefit cancer research.
Cy Woods Theater Students Raise Money for Cancer Research - The Cypress Woods High School theater department’s cast and crew of Lilly’s Purple Plastic Purse raised $1,000 to donate to the Snowdrop Organization to assist patients and
families at Texas Children
’s Cancer Center.
Students Receive Scholastic Writing Awards - Thirteen Cy-Fair ISD students were among 212 Harris County winners in the 2010
Scholastic Writing Awards regional competition.
The Writing Awards are part of the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards, of which
the Harris County Department of Education announced 558 regional winners from
15 Harris County school districts and 13 private schools. The entries are
judged from more than 2,000 art and writing entries. Gold Key writing winners
advance to national competition in New York City. National winners are
announced in May, and students and teachers are invited to attend a ceremony at
Carnegie Hall in New York City.
Three Cy-Fair ISD students earned Gold Key Writing Awards: Layla Bakhtiari, Cypress Lakes High School, Poetry, Epiphany of a Fractured Four-Year-Old; Catherine Silverman, Cypress Woods High School, Poetry, Evolution of a Meltdown – Poetry Collection; and Lindsay Oncken, Cypress Woods High School, Poetry, Wheat Fields.

Student Artwork to be Displayed at State Capitol - Five Cy-Fair ISD students’ artwork was chosen by the Texas Art Education Association to be a part of
celebrating Youth Art Month, which takes place every March.
The 2010 theme of Youth Art Month is “Art Shapes The World.” The students’ artwork will be displayed at the South Extension of the state capitol on March
6-13, and the students will be honored during a reception in the Capitol Grill
on March 7.
The following students’ artwork will be on display: Cypress Woods High School senior Kenneth Bassey, Marble Flows; Cypress Woods High School senior Justin Klein, Southern Point; Hamilton Middle School eighth-grade student Andrew Liu, Hill Country Blues; Labay Middle School eighth-grade student Ronaldo Maldonado, A Full Day; and Kirk Elementary School fifth-grade student Austin Chan, Fall Leaves.
Cypress Creek High School junior Caitlyn Rasmussen is one of six finalists for American Cheerleader magazine’s 2009 Cheerleader of the Year.
Cy Creek Student a Finalist for Cheerleader of the Year - Cypress Creek High School junior Caitlyn Rasmussen is one of six cheerleaders nationally nominated
for American Cheerleader magazine’s 2009 Cheerleader of the Year.
Caitlyn was automatically nominated as a result of being named Cheerleader of
the Month in the February 2009 edition of the magazine.
Rasmussen, 16, is co-captain of Cypress Creek’s varsity cheer squad. She is a member of National Honor Society and a Level 5
All-Star cheerleader for the Texas Lonestar Cheer Company. She also coaches two
teams at Texas Lonestar, a team of 3- to 5-year-olds and a team of special
needs
children.

Aragon Middle School Announces Spelling Bee Winner - Aragon Middle School held its 9th Annual Spelling Bee. More than 20 students
competed in the Bee, and after nine rounds, two winners emerged. The Aragon
Spelling Bee Champion is
Joshua Mars, and the runner-up is Roshni Chandwani. Both students will advance to compete in the Cy-Fair ISD District Spelling Bee
on Feb. 23 at the Berry Center.
