Of course, some of the cards sent (like those most of us remember exchanging
with classmates during our early school days) were humorous and not meant to
convey any serious thoughts whatsoever. Others, though, were especially
romantic, as are the cards shown here. These cards were written in German, the
language used by much of the Cypress population in the mid 1800s and early
1900s.
If you would like to learn more Cypress history, visit Cypress Top Historic
Park, 26026 Old Hempstead Highway. Cypress Top is one of
Commissioner Steve Radack’s Harris County Precinct 3 Parks. Museum buildings are open every Tuesday from 9
a.m.- 4 p.m. for drop-in visitors. Cypress Historical Society docents conduct
tours at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. To schedule a group tour for a different day
and time, please call this Precinct 3 office number:

Whatever its origins may have been, Feb. 14 has become the day for exchanging
love messages, and St. Valentine has become the patron saint of lovers.
Feb. 14 has long been celebrated as a special day of love and romance. There are several legends telling how this came to be; no one seems sure of the
real story.
We do know that in ancient Rome, there was a holiday on Feb. 14 to honor Juno,
the Queen of Roman gods and goddesses. She was also known as the goddess of
women and marriage.
There is also a popular legend saying the Feb. 14 date originated from St. Valentine, a Roman priest who was
martyred on Feb. 14, 269 A.D., for withstanding the emperor
’s ban on marriage for his soldiers. It is said that St. Valentine left a
farewell note for his jailer
’s daughter, who had become his friend while he was imprisoned awaiting
execution; the note was signed
“From Your Valentine.” Whatever its origins may have been, Feb. 14 has become the day for exchanging
love messages, and St. Valentine has become the patron saint of lovers.
Here in the United States, the first commercial valentines were introduced in
the 1800s.
Sending valentines became one way of showing love and care for another person.
