Students Win Key Awards for Art Portfolios - Four Cypress Woods High School students won Gold and Silver Key awards for
their art portfolios in the Scholastic Art Awards
of 2009.
Seniors Natasha Crea, Kole Lugar and Marla Sobotik received Gold Key portfolio awards, and senior Briana Borders won a Silver key portfolio award. Gold Key award recipients advance as national
qualifiers
—a selection which will be included in Scholastic’s national catalog and annual anthology.
The four students are taught by Cypress Woods art teacher Charlotte Stuart.
District Lands 16 on Academic All-State Team - Sixteen Cy-Fair ISD football players were selected to the Texas High School
Coaches Association 2008-09 Academic All-State Football Team, sponsored by
State Farm Insurance.
The teams are selected by a point system that awards points for GPA, class rank
and SAT or ACT scores. One district athlete, Cy-Fair High School senior
Matthew Mitchell, was named to the Elite Team, representing the highest possible point total.
Cy-Fair ISD’s 16 academic all-state players are: First Team – Wesley Ryan, Cy-Fair; Robert Slatton, Cy-Fair; Da’Marcus Baymon, Cypress Creek; Lance Siragusa, Jersey Village; Cole Heffernan, Langham Creek; Second Team – Stefan Galabaza, Cy-Fair; Kyle Harlan, Cypress Creek; Ryan Bott, Cypress Springs; David Polansky, Cypress Springs; Jonathan Baubie, Jersey Village; Robert Ottman, Jersey Village; Honorable Mention – Eduardo DeLeon, Cy-Fair; Brian Fitzgerald, Cy-Fair; Tyler Burgess, Cypress Falls; and Darius Wilson, Cypress Springs.
AP Names 5A All-State Football Players - The Associated Press named Cypress Ridge High School senior quarterback Russell Shepard the Class 5A Offensive Player of the Year, when the AP released its All-State high school football team.
Shepard, who will play for LSU in 2009, threw for 1,458 passing yards and 16
touchdowns and ran for 17 touchdowns. The All-State team is selected based on
regular season performance. Including the post season, Shepard passed for 20
touchdowns and ran for 28.
“Russell Shepard is very deserving of every award and accolade that comes his
way,
” said Cypress Ridge head coach Gary Thiebaud. “He’s a great quarterback, leader, competitor and humanitarian. We will hear great
things about Russell for many years to come, both on the athletic field and in
our society.
”

senior linebacker
Patrick West was named Honorable Mention All-State Defense.
Grace School Students Coordinate Book Drive for Ike Victims - Four sixth-grade girls from Grace School coordinated a Book Drive to help the
schools that were destroyed by Hurricane Ike. The entire school was involved in
the drive.
Students were encouraged to bring gently used books and deposit them in boxes
placed around the school. The drive ran for two weeks and resulted in 35 boxes
of books that were collected. This amounted to approximately 1,200 books that
were sent to Bridge City schools.
The girls responsible for this project were Lauren Lloveras, Elizabeth Dalbello, Rebekah Robertson and Cassidy Kelley.
Students Win TAJE Awards - Students from Cy-Fair, Cypress Falls, Cypress Ridge and Jersey Village high
schools were named winners in the Texas Association of Journalism Educators
2008-09 Clip Contest.
Students were honored in both the Newspaper and Yearbook categories. Jersey
Village High School senior
Skye Comstock led the list of yearbook winners with 10 awards, while Cypress Falls High
School senior
Chelsea Ruffino led the newspaper winners with eight awards.
