North Carolina’s High Point Furniture Market, reputedly the largest furniture market in the country, is looking forward to the effects of a recovering economy when the market opens on April 17. The 2010 High Point Market business outlook states that the coming six months could be the best the U.S. home furnishings market has seen in a good while.
“With store floors everywhere starved for new merchandise, and consumers heading back into the marketplace, retailers are on the hunt for fresh and exciting products, ” says Brian Casey, president and CEO of the High Point Market Authority. “We expect that to translate into increased activity at the ... market this spring. Retailers will find more new product introductions, in every category and style, at every price point, than at any other market on earth. ”
Early buyer response to Pre-Market, held in March, “has already made it clear that the economy, and our industry, is turning a corner, ” says Casey. “While the past 18 months have been difficult for everyone in the industry, all indications are that we ’re finally on the road to recovery.”
Advice for consumers? When shopping for furniture, be sure to consider quality as well as style. “If you are purchasing furniture that will be used often, it’s important to learn about the interior workmanship,” advises Hirschhaut. The fabric of an upholstered piece is also important, according to Sofield. “Fabrics are such an important part of interior design, not only from an aesthetic level, but also on a tactile one, ” Sofield says. “It should encourage touch, create dimension and be of such quality that it can withstand the daily rigors endured by upholstery. ” To help consumers know what to look for, the AFMA launched www.findyourfurniture.com, a great Web site for browsing online showrooms of America’s manufacturers.
The furniture style most popular to today’s consumers may be called eclectic, individual expression, juxtaposition, self-gratification or anything else that fits. But, whatever you call it, new designs coming out of market and into furniture stores this summer should be varied enough to satisfy the taste of every furniture consumer in the country. l
